| North Fork Audubon Society's Red House Nature Center on Route 48 in Greenport | The North Fork Audubon Society is proud of its members' stewardship at this site. Volunteers created and continue to maintain a diverse trail system, extending just over one and a half miles on about fifty acres of preserved parkland. The trails wind through wooded areas, circumnavigate Inlet Pond, traverse a sandy stretch of Long Island Sound Beach, and meander alongside a small freshwater pond complete with muskrat den. The trails are open daily for hiking, from dawn to dusk. Here's our current Trail Map. |
| Take a moment to walk through our demonstration gardens surrounding the Red House. Long Island native plants and a man made pond are important features. Many of the plants were selected to attract specific types of birds and wildlife. These gardens represent the work of dedicated volunteers inspired by the site's natural history and former agricultural use of the property. The gardens are alive with unusual sights and sounds of small wild creatures, filled with birdsong in every season of the year; in the spring and summer they buzz, hum, and flutter with bees, beneficial insects and butterflies. |
