End of Season Plover/Tern Site Management Report
North Fork Audubon Society 2006
Kimogener Point: No activity noted through 2006.
Downs Creek: No activity.
Maratooka Point: Not a viable site.
Mattituck Inlet: July 16, ppl have hatched, cannot locate chicks. Female plover seen feeding at waters edge. July 17, 6 LETE chicks seen on beach. July 21, Joe Jannsen and Tom Damiani spot 2 ppl chicks with adult. July 26, Tom Damiani saw one ppl adult with 1 chick. Heard another plover on other side of beach, perhaps they were split up. August 2 counted approx. 150 LETE adults/20 chicks. Approx. 8 chicks near fledging with the remainder in different stages of development. 2 adult PPL 1 chick. August 7 – App. 100 adult LETE with 10 fledged chicks; 12 chicks near fledging. 8/10 – App. 80 adult LETE with 14 fledged chicks. No PPL seen. 8/17 – LETEs have gone. 8/24 Removed jetty fencing. Heard ppl. 8/31 removed rest of fencing. Saw adult ppl by lifeguard stand with fledged chick. TOTALS: app. 24 fledged LETE. 1 fledged PPL.
Little Hog Neck: Site monitored by NFAS and DEC.
Cutchogue Harbor: NFAS monitoring Meadow Beach Preserve within Cutchogue Harbor site. There have been no plovers seen at Meadow. LETE nesting at Meadow Beach.. 7/12 Put up LETE nesting signs. 7/21 app 25 LETE adults 3 LETE chicks. 7/26 – app 40 adult LETE 6 chicks. August – visited site every other day till 8/26. App. 30 adult LETE. App 10 LETE fledged.
Little Creek: Site being monitored by NFAS and DEC. 7/4, plover chicks have fledged. Saw 4 fledged LETEs with 8 adults. 7/17 - PPL fledged. Saw 10 adult LETE with 5 fledglings. 8/1 – LETEs are gone. Fencing removed by DEC.
Goldsmith’s Inlet: No nesting this year. Removed fencing 9/1. Left fencing up late to protect site from ATV traffic.
Paradise Point: Not viable.
Jockey Creek: No habitat.
Goose Creek: Monitored by NFAS and DEC. No plovers or terns.
Gull Pond West: Second PPL nesting exclosed July 13th, with three eggs. Monitoring nest 3 times a week. App. 22 LETE with 4 chicks 7/19. PPL had one egg hatch. LETE chicks beginning to fledge. 8/2- One PPL hatched other two eggs in nest. 24 LETE 8 fledged. 8/15 Removed fencing. App 10 LETE on beach with one Common. Did not see PPL. Don’t know if fledged or predated.
Angel Shores: Did not monitor. DEC said site not active.
Corey Creek: 7/5 saw PPL pair with 3 fledged chicks. No LETE. 7/10 – NO LETE or PPL. Fencing removed by DEC.
Richmond Creek: No birds in 2006.
Pipes Cove: No birds in 2006.
Conkling Point: Privately owned. Need to access by boat. Did not monitor.
Port of Egypt: Needs to be accessed by boat. Did not monitor.
