About Us

The Red HouseThe North Fork Audubon Society is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society. Our chapter's territory comprises the North Fork of Long Island, New York (from Jamesport, east, to Orient Point), Shelter Island, and Fishers Island.

Our Mission Statement

North Fork Audubon Society connects people with nature. We promote the preservation of birds and wildlife by protecting and restoring critical habitats of Long Island's North Fork. Our hands-on environmental and natural science programs encourage individuals of all ages to participate. We aim to grow a strong community of active members and supporters who value nature.

Inlet Pond County Park

We are proud of our members' stewardship at Inlet Pond County Park (located at 65275 Route 48 in Greenport, New York). Volunteers created and continue to maintain a diverse trail system, extending just over one and a half miles on approximately 55 acres of preserved park land. The trails wind through wooded areas, circle Inlet Pond, traverse a sandy stretch of Long Island Sound beach, and meander alongside a small freshwater pond complete with muskrat den. The trails are open daily for hiking from dawn to dusk. Here's our current Trail Map.

Demonstration Gardens

GardensWhen you visit, take a moment to walk through the "healthy habitat" gardens that surround the Red House. Long Island native plants and a manmade pond are important features. Birdsong fills the air in every season of the year; in the spring and summer bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects and buzz, hum, and flutter. These gardens represent the work of dedicated volunteers inspired by the site's natural history and former agricultural use. We are currently embarking on a project to ensure that at least 60% .of the plants in our demonstration gardens are natives, including local genotypes obtained from the Long Island Native Plant Initiative in Riverhead

If you recently became a Master Gardener and would like to donate your service hours to us, we would be happy to accept them! We have a number of ongoing projects that need support, and are also open to new ones.
