NFAS President Receives 2021 Herman Bressler Award

Congratulations to North Fork Audubon President, Peggy Lauber for receiving the prestigious 2021 Herman Bressler Award for her work in Bluebird Conservation.

Peggy was nominated for the award by retired veterinarian, NFAS member, and former North Fork resident, Dr. William Zitek. Dr. Zitek is a Bluebird steward in his own right, having been very active in the Bluebird nesting program at The Nature Conservancy's Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island.

Peggy has spearheaded the effort to build Bluebird nesting boxes, and find places to erect them them across the North Fork - on vineyards and private property. She also monitors the nesting boxes, and reports successful hatchings and fledging, and nest failures, as part of a larger project to monitor the health of the species. In addition, Peggy serves as the New York State Bluebird Society Area Coordinator for the Long Island Region, as well as serving as a director on the NYSBS Board, a position that Tom Damiani will be taking over in 2022.
